Gujarat govt charges IPS officer

Gandhinagar, Aug 13: The Gujarat government Saturday served a chargesheet on senior police officer Rahul Sharma for deposing in courts and commissions in the 2002 riots case without permission, sources said.
The action comes within less than 24 hours of the state government denying that it was taking punitive action against the Indian Police Service officer.
Saying that he is yet to study the chargesheet, Sharma's lawyer Mukul Sinha told reporters that his client will seek legal recourse.
The chargesheet was served on Sharma on the lines of the show cause notice issued to him in February this year, sources said.
"False propaganda is being spread that the state government is taking punitive action against Shri Sharma for his depositions in the courts and commissions, which is far from the truth," said a government statement issued Friday evening.
Earlier Friday, the Gujarat High Court rejected Sharma's petition against the Narendra Modi government for allegedly stonewalling on providing information which he needed to answer the show-cause notice, on the ground that it was out of its territorial jurisdiction. IANS
