Assembly session in last week of Sept
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Srinagar, Aug 14: The summer session of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative
Assembly will be held in the last week of September when opposition will try to corner the ruling coalition on the human rights issue.
"We have proposed that eight to 10 days session be held from September
26," said state Parliamentary Affairs Minister.
Asked about the short duration of the summer session, he argued the present government has increased it to around eight days from the three to four days during the previous coalition government.
"During the times of PDP-led coalition, the summer session used to be just three or four days," the minister said.
Sources in the Assembly Secretariat said the proposal of the government has been accepted. The MLAs will soon be informed to submit their questions for the session, the sources said.
They said the members will be given sufficient time to submit their questions to the Assembly secretariat.
As per the constitution of the state, the state assembly has to meet at least once in six months. The last session of the assembly was held in March-April at Jammu.
The recent incidents -- custodial death of a youth in Sopore town of Baramulla district and the alleged fake encounter of a civilian in Surankote area of Poonch -- are major issues the opposition parties are likely rake up during the session.
"Obviously, these are grave issues .... People are again feeling insecure and if we do not raise these issues in the Assembly, we will be failing in our duties toward the people," a senior PDP leader said.
