Jammu, Aug 15: Police today arrested an employee of a petrol pump and his friend for stealing Rs 76, 500 from the cash counter in Akhnoor, about 30 kilometers from here.
Official sources said that the accused employee and his accomplice were arrested after the former lodged a false report with police that unidentified persons beat him up and decamped with the amount.
The accused Rohit Singh son of Jagat Singh of Pragwal told police that some unidentified persons came at the pump in a white Wagon-R and robbed the money after beating him up, sources said.
Rohit had also informed owner of the petrol pump about the theft.
Acting on the complaint, the police started investigation into the case and found that no white colour Wagon-R has entered Akhnoor during the intervening night of August 14 and 15, 2011.”
The police became suspicious and called Rohit to the police station where he broke down and confessed to have stolen the money.
SDPO Akhnoor Mustaq Choudhary said that the accused was helped by his friend Vijay Singh of Ghar Singh- a baker shop owner in Pragwal.
The amount was later recovered by the police on the disclosure of the accused, he said.
