Mirwaiz taken off air from FM
‘There Was Objection From Some Quarters’

Srinagar, Aug 17: A radio show featuring Kashmir’s head priest Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, which became an instant hit, has suddenly gone off air from popular radio channel 92.7 Big FM, drawing flak from listeners.
Since first Ramadan, Mirwaiz would be regular voice on Big Noon Chai, a three-hour morning show where he would speak at length on social issues in the light of Islam. The program anchored by RJ Haya would mostly pose questions about day-to-day issues.
The program, recorded everyday at the cleric’s Nageen residence, was being aired amid huge publicity by the radio channel with advertisements like ‘Is Ramadan Mein Suniye Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Ko.’
Interestingly, Mirwaiz who is a senior separatist leader and Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) had been maintaining that the program was on “apolitical issues.”
But since August 14, the program went off air all of a sudden. The listeners, who would remain glued to the radio sets, are fuming over the sudden discontinuation of the programme.
“This is cheating with listeners. They (FM) people had been advertising that Mirwaiz Sahib would be throwing light on Islamic issues everyday during this month. But to our shock the program has been subjected to sudden disappearance,” said Khurshid Ahmed of Shalimar.
But an FM spokesperson says the cleric’s program was an “innovation aired for a pre-specified period.”
“We at FM believe in innovation and we will continue with it,” said a 92.7 Big FM spokesman on phone from Mumbai, adding, “It wasn’t to continue for the entire month.”
As for the Mirwaiz, he expected the program to continue for the entire month.
“I was doing it out of good faith… was happy that the team of young boys and girls are dong a good job (at 92.7 Big FM) and are concerned towards the religious issues as well,” Mirwaiz told Greater Kashmir.
Asked what went wrong, he said: “I believe there has been some objection from some quarters. I don’t know the reality. You better inquire from the FM people.”
