Post offices to add banking services in India: Sachin Pilot

Srinagar, Aug 22: Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, today emphasized the need for upgrading and improving the BSNL service in the State.
He was speaking on the occasion of inauguration of Floating Post Office-cum-Museum by chief minister Omar Abdullah here today.
Dr. Farooq appreciated the Post and Telegraph Department for reviving the Floating Post Office-cum-Museum at Dal Lake and wished for its success.
Dr. Abdullah said that this year’s peace dividends have accrued to the people at lower levels and gave considerable fillip to their economy.
Union Minister of State for Communications and IT, Sachin Pilot said that 1683 post offices are working in length and breadth in the State providing facilities to the people in rural, hilly, far-flung and remote areas. He said that the facility of the Floating Post Office-cum-Museum in Dal Lake is unique facility to provide services to the tourists and the Dal dwellers.
Sachin said that the floating post office would provide varied functions of a post office, post shop, post office Museum and mobile collection and delivery of mail.
The Union Minister of State said that his department has moved a proposal to add banking facilities in 1.50 lakh post offices in the country at a cost of about Rs. 19000 crore.
“This would prove a turnaround in reviving the post offices and making them viable delivering centres”, he said, adding that the computerization and internet connectivity of all the post offices in the country is another remarkable initiative in offing.
He assured full help from his ministry to the State in universalizing postal, telecommunication and IT services.
The Minister for Tourism, Nawang Rigzin Jora and Post Master General, J&K Circle, John Samuel also spoke on the occasion.
The Chief Minister and other dignitaries also released the special postal covers and artists of Department of Information presented a sufiyana concert on the occasion.
