Driver’s death sparks protest
Jammu, Aug 25: Hundreds of transporters on Thursday blocked vehicular movement on Tawi Bridge, here for over an hour to protest the failure of the police to arrest the assailants responsible for the killing of a driver.
The deceased driver who was attacked by some persons in Katra early this week succumbed to his injuries here at Government Medical College Hospital Jammu.
As the word about the death of Vaid Prakash son of Munshi Ram of Miran Sahib spread the transporters assembled outside GMCH. “They staged noisy protest demonstration in the hospital and later took the body of the victim with them. Putting the body of the deceased in the middle of the road on Tawi Bridge, the agitators blocked the vehicular traffic seeking arrest of the attackers,” the eyewitnesses said.
A senior police official, preferring not to be named said, Katra police so far has detained a dozen suspected persons in the assault case of Vaid Prakash, a bus driver.
“We were hopeful that the victim after gaining conscious would give names of the assailants but it is unfortunate that he succumbed,” the police official said.
