Srinagar, Aug 28: Fire broke out in the old documentation record room of Doordarshan Kendra Srinagar on Sunday evening causing damage to the papers stored inside it.
“We received a call from Doordarshan saying that the single storey record room was engulfed by fire. We dispatched more than six fire tenders immediately to the spot to douse the fire,” Deputy Director Fire and Emergency Services, Khurshid Ahmad Bazaz said. “The timely action of firemen prevented the fire from spreading.”
He said the cause of the fire was being ascertained. “We couldn’t ascertain that how fire broke out in the building. However, the special team will be employed to investigate the cause”, he said.
Sources in the Kendra told Greater Kashmir that the room contained documents from accounts section, transmission and records from the year 1972.
Talking to Greater Kashmir Deputy Chief Warden Civil Defence, Aamir Ali said the volunteers of civil defence were also employed. “Our volunteers also helped the firemen to douse the fire”, he said.
He said a Doordarshan employee Altaf Hussain who also works as a civil defense volunteer informed the fire control room and the civil defense headquarter for help. “His timely wisdom helped a lot in controlling the fire”, Ali said.
Amir said the recent training program organized by divisional authorities helped the volunteers including Altaf Hussain.
Meanwhile, the fire also broke out at a top floor of Institute of Hotel Management which was prevented by the timely action of the administration and students, Bazaz said.
