CENTRAL UNIVERSITY ROW

Jammu, Aug 2: Three persons, including two students and a police constable were injured when police restored to severe cane-charge on students near fountain plaza on Jammu University campus who were protesting against the delay in making Jammu Central University (JCU) functional.
“As soon as the activists of Central University Joint Action Committee (CUJAC) assembled near fountain plaza to torch the effigy of the Union HRD ministry for delay in establishment of Jammu Central University and appointment of the Vice-Chancellor, police restored to unprovoked cane-charge, leading to critical injuries to two students,” eyewitness told Greater Kashmir.
Sources said that the university administration had deputed police personnel to prevent the students from torching any effigy inside the campus.
“The government had directed the university authorities to prevent the students from burning the effigy of Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the varsity and also Union HRD ministry. Students faced the wrath of police after they tried to torch the effigy of HRD ministry,” sources added.
Two students identified as Mohinder Pal Singh Pandu (president CUJAC) and Harsh Choudhary received critical injuries in police cane charge while other protestors managed to escape from the spot. A police constable also received injuries in the clash. “Police have registered a case against CUJAC president,” sources said.
Pandu told Greater Kashmir that police restored to unprovoked cane charge and they even did not listen to the students’ pleas. “A consensus was reached between Vice Chancellor Prof Varun Sahni and student organisations that police deployed on the campus would not stop the students from staging protest in democratic manner but today’s incident was complete highhandedness on the part of the authorities,” he maintained.
Meanwhile, Progressive Students Association (PSA) took serious note of the police cane charge and boycotted the classes on the campus. Jammu Joint Students Federation also condemned the cane charge on the students.
The PSA activists also took out a protest march towards the Vice-Chancellor and raised slogans against the police and the Jammu university administration against the lathi-charge on the students. They also staged dharna outside V-C Chamber for half an hour.
PSA spokesperson M S bhatti said that they have decided to boycott the classes against the police highhanded from tomorrow till government removes police from the campus.
Meanwhile, the relay-hunger strike launched by Jammu Province Peoples Forum and National Panthers Students Union entered ninth consecutive day on Tuesday.
Dogra Brahmin Pratinidhi Sabha members Ved Parkash Sharma, Varinder Mangotra, Sat Pal Sharma, Shanti Saroop Baru, Guru Dutt Khajuria and academician Hari Om and H C Jalmaria, Kamal Singh Jamwal, Udey Chand, Ch Ghulam Rasool, Gajan Singh Khajuria, Ajay Charangoo Chairman, Satish Sher Secretary, S.K Kichloo Secretary and Ram Singh Salathia sat on hunger strike on the behalf of the JPPF.
