This refers to the news “UN welcomes Indo-Pak thaw” (GK July 31). UN chief Ban Ki Moon has welcomed the recent “constructive” talks between the Indo-Pak foreign ministers and encouraged the two countries to resolve their outstanding issues through dialogue in the interest of the regional security. It is a very significant statement. UN can play a very constructive role in resolving the Kashmir issue by putting pressure on both India and Pakistan to resolve the dispute. India and Pakistan seem to have come a little closer over a period of time. And this should be taken as an opportunity to resolve all the outstanding issues. The CBMs like increase in cross-LoC trading days and expanding travel to include tourism and religious aspects is not enough. The two countries need to move beyond CBMs and ensure resolution of issues like Kashmir. Last month, UN Chief while underlining that the Kashmir issue needs to be resolved peacefully through talks, had said that he would discuss with leaders of India and Pakistan on how he can help in the resolution process. The UN must do it forthwith so that there is peace in South Asia in general and Kashmir in particular.
