Lal Bab Sahib colony macadamization aborted; residents aghast

SYED IMRAN ALI HAMDANI

Srinagar, Aug 8: The residents of Shah-e-Hamdan Colony at Lal Bab Sahib Zakura are up in arms against the Roads and Building department for what they said leaving the macadamization half way in the locality.
The residents said: “After long persuasion, the R&B department approved macadamization of lanes and by-lanes of our colony that were in dilapidated condition for years.”
They said the work was started in July but left half way for some “unknown reasons.”
“More than 50% work was completed by the contractor. But on August 8, to our utter shock, the dozer and other machinery were taken away. On enquiry, we were informed that the work has been suspended by the department and that the remaining can’t be completed.”
The residents said they contacted the concerned authorities. “They (officials) told us that the work can’t be completed because of some orders issued by higher-ups to stop it.”
“This callous attitude of the department is totally in disregard to basic principles of allotment / sanction of the macadamization  work at the colony. It is not understood how the department has chosen to shift this allotted work to some other place when the same stands sanctioned and approved in our favour,” the residents said.
When contacted that the R&B officials said the work was started with “limited funds from NABARD” and so couldn’t be continued.
“We have applied for additional funds from the state government. Once released the work will be completed,” the official told Greater Kashmir. Asked about time span, he said: “It might take around a fortnight to resume to the work.”
