Timber smugglers kill SPO

Srinagar, Aug 8: A Special Police Officer (SPO) who was wounded in an assault allegedly by timber smugglers in Rafiabad area of north Kashmir’s Barmamulla district passed away on Monday evening, police said.
Superintendent of Police Sopore Imtiyaz Hussain said a team of Dangiwacha police on specific information about timber smuggling laid a Naka at Chijhama Rafiabad this morning. “In the mean time 26 smugglers carrying timber passed through the area. On being intercepted they assaulted policemen with sharp edged weapons and hit an SPO Tariq Ahmed (332-Sopore) on head,” he said.
Imtiyaz said Tariq was shifted to SKIMS Soura where he succumbed to injuries.
“We have registered a murder case against 26 timber smugglers and one of them has been arrested,” he said.
