Agriculture officer, shopkeeper arrested

Islamabad (Anantnag), Dec 11: Police on Sunday claimed that it unearthed a major scam in the Agriculture Block Verinag here in south Kashmir by arresting two persons including an Official of Agriculture Department allegedly involved in black marketing of hybrid seeds and fertilizers meant for the distribution among the farmers on subsidy. “On a specific information about the black marketing of the seeds and fertilizers supposed to be distributed among the farmer community on subsidized rates we arrested a shopkeeper from Larkipora village falling in the Agriculture block Verinag,” Deputy Superintendent, Headquarters, Tanveer Jeelani told reporters here.
He said during interrogation the shopkeeper confessed the crime and revealed the names of some officials of the Agriculture department involved in the fraud.
“On the revelations of the shopkeeper we arrested a Store Keeper, Agriculture Zone Verinag for his involvement in selling the departmental seeds and fertilizers to private parties,” the DSP said.
He said the police have also recovered 5 hundred kgs of hybrid quality oil seeds, 5 bags of wheat seeds and 3 bags of fertilizers from the shop that had been sold to him by the agriculture officer. He said that investigations are on and more arrests are expected.
“Two main accused have been arrested and FIR No. 397/ 2011 US 409, 411 RPC has been lodged against them,” said Jeelani.
