7-A-side winter football tourney from Sunday
Srinagar, Dec 15: Football Players Welfare Association (FPWA) under the aegis of J&K Football Association (JKFA) is all set to organise first seven-A-side winter football tournament at Polo Ground here from Sunday.
It be will first time that FPWA which came into existent three years back and headed by International footballer Mehraj-ud-Din Wadoo would be organizing any type of football event. For the event FPWA has already got the backing of JKFA and the two Associations would be working jointly to kick start winter football activities in the Valley.
The event will be open and any team from the Valley is eligible to participate. FPWA is expecting participation of around 32 teams.
FPWA official Sajid Yousuf Dar said, “The purpose of forming FPWA was not to organise events but as the J&K State Sports Council is not sanctioning enough funds to JKFA it was necessary to step in and organize events.”
“Already JKFA is falling short of funds as the amount that is being granted to it by JKSSC is meager. It would have been difficult for them to organise winter event on their own,” he added.
When contacted JKFA spokesperson confirmed that it has given its backing to the upcoming event. “Yes we are backing the upcoming winter event organised by FPWA. We received application of organising the event from FPWA which was readily accepted. It is new initiative and we are backing it fully.”
