Accused DySP surrenders, Inspector still at large

Ramban, Dec 15: A Deputy Superintendent of Police – who was evading his arrest in a custodial death pending trial from past 16-years – surrendered before a court, here on Thursday.
Official sources said that the accused DySP Sanaullah Naik was declared as proclaimed offender about four years back after he failed to appear before the investigation agency and Police filed an application under section 512 CrPc against him.
The accused surrendered before the court of Principal Sessions Judge Ramban, Choudhary Muhammad Akram, who remanded him to judicial custody till further orders.
The accused was wanted in a case regarding death of Ayaz Ahmed Wani son of Abdul Rasheed Wani of Bankote Banihal, who allegedly died in police custody.
As per the police case, the deceased was picked up by the then Station House Officer in the year 1995 and was allegedly tortured in custody. He suffered critical injuries and was shifted to Government Medical College hospital Jammu, where he succumbed to his injuries.
After police refused to register a murder case, the family members of the deceased approached the state High Court which directed the Crime Branch to investigate the case.
The investigation agency booked DySP Sanaulla, Inspector Qayoom Mirza, constable Muhammad Rafiq, a surrender militant Muhammad Ashraf and a civilian Nazir Ahmed Wani. Crime Branch also produced challan against the accused in the court of law but the DySP and Inspector evaded arrest.
Police inspector Qayoom Mirza is at large and against him proceedings under section 512 CrPc are also pending before the court. The other three accused have been granted bail by the state High Court.
