Parking space
This refers to the news that Srinagar has only 3.7 percent parking space for light vehicles and two-wheelers. According to the report, the city can accommodate only 5,000 light vehicles and two-wheelers when the Regional Transport Offices have registered 1,33,342 (1.33 lakh) such vehicles up to March 11, 2011. The registered vehicles exclude the floating vehicle population coming from other districts and regions of the state. It is a very serious issue and concern which can’t be taken for granted. The J&K government has to come clean on the issue and put some kind of a bar on registration of vehicles. While it seems that we are overall under motorised, no vehicle should be registered till the Government comes up with a comprehensive policy on regulation of vehicles. Presently there is no policy whereby such an issue can be addressed. We need more parking places and more widened roads to accommodate the increasing fleet of traffic. Otherwise traffic mess is going to be one of the biggest concern that we can face in very near future. It is true that Srinagar city witnesses a huge influx of light motor vehicles and two-wheelers within 2-km radius around Lal Chowk. So the traffic department must look into the issue on priority.
