Meter tampering gang, consumers chargesheeted

Srinagar Dec 23: In a electric meter tampering case, the Crime Branch (CB) Kashmir has chargesheeted 43 persons including three private mechanics who used to offer services to unscrupulous customers, causing losses to the Power Development Department, an official handout said.
The CB on the basis of information regarding tampering of digital meters to get low cost electricity bills by various consumers of the City registered a case vide FIR No 23/07 in Police Station, Crime Branch, Kashmir.
“During investigation a gang of three persons Adil Nazir , Showkat Ahmad and Parvez Ahmad, who were expert in tampering the digital electric meters, were nabbed,” the handout added.
“The trio confessed during questioning that they have tempered many digital meters in different parts of the City after they were paid an amount of rupees one to two thousand by the consumers for the tampering of their digital meters so as to get low cost electricity bills.”
On this CB along with officers from PDD conducted raids in different parts of City on the instance of gang and seized 40 electric meters from the houses of different consumers in presence of a Magistrate deputed by the district administration along with the team.
“The meters thus seized were put to test by the team of engineers of the PDD department who established that the meters have been tempered after breaking the seals in order to make theft of electricity and get low cost electricity bills,” the handout added.
“The investigation of the case was closed as proved against all the above 43 accused and the chargesheet to the case was produced before the Court of Passenger Tax Srinagar under section 420 RPC and 38 ,43 Electricity Act for judicial determination,” the official handout said.
