Beeru College faces staff shortage, students aghast

‘Building Not Designed As Per UGC Norms’

Budgam (Beeru), Dec 25: The students of Beeru Degree College have complained about lack of teaching faculty in the educational institution.
The college has sanctioned staff strength of 15 Assistant and Associate Professors, but only eight posts have been filled up.
“The studies of students have been adversely affected due to the lack of teaching staff,” the students told Greater Kashmir adding that despite repeated pleas, the college administration failed to take up the issue with the senior functionaries in the Higher Education Department.
According to the students, the post of Physical Training Instructor is also lying vacant in the college. “There is no play ground in the college due to which the students aren’t able to participate in extra curricular activities,” a group of students told Greater Kashmir, urging the government to allot a piece of land at an earliest.
The students also complained about dilapidated road connectivity from main town to the Degree College. “The road is dotted with potholes and it becomes very difficult to move, especially during the rainy days,” the students added.
They said that despite repeated requests, the college administration failed to take up the matter with the concerned department.
According to the locals, the Jammu and Kashmir government approved Degree College for Beeru in 2003. “The college started functioning in a building from 2005 and was later shifted to the newly constructed structure,” they locals added.
Building design not according to UGC norms
“The new college building has been constructed by National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC), which is a Government of India owned company. The firm has hardly taken the climatic and other conditions into consideration before starting the work on the project”, said a local social activist and Citizen’s Council Beerwah Chairman, Tanveer Ahmad.
“Chandigarh based architect, who was hired by NBCC, never visited Beeru, when college building was under construction,” Tanveer added. “The building doesn’t have a concrete plinth and the foundation is made up of bricks which absorbs moisture. The college building has a huge open courtyard wherein snow gets accumulated during winter which takes months to melt,” Tanveer added.
“The classrooms are not large and spacious and hardly 55 students can be accommodated in a room which is in violation of the University Grants Commission norms under which 80 students have to be accommodated in one classroom which must be very spacious,” said an official on the conditions of anonymity.
“There is no full fledged library in the college,” the students complained and sought the intervention of Commissioner Secretary Higher Education in this regard.
