US-based NRK Cardiologist, Dr Muhammad Yousuf Kanjwal who is known for his endeavour of helping his homeland in the field of medical sciences yet again did the same during his recent visit to this summer Capital by attending a 14-day workshop on Cardiac Electrophysiology and Radiofrequency ablation at SK Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura. The Department of Cardiology SKIMS hosted the event, which marked advancements in treatments to heart ailments.
The workshop came as a blessing in disguise for many poor patients who couldn’t otherwise afford this treatment for the want of resources, which Dr Kanjwal, a Professor of Medicine and Director EP lab, University of Toledo, Ohio, USA, chipped in.
The SKIMS medicos said: “In his current visit to the Institute, a structured teaching cum lab activity was undertaken along with the faculty of the Department of Cardiology. This included a workshop wherein the technique and methodology of radiofrequency ablations and implantation of Bi-V pacing and ICD implantation was demonstrated.”
The upcoming Cardiologists at SKIMS said they were thrilled to participate in this event aimed at improving cardiac treatments available at Valley’s sole tertiary care hospital.
Dr Khurshid Iqbal, Professor and host HoD said the Department was “expanding the interventional treatment of various cardiac ailments”.
“The present workshop was a step forward in this direction,” he said.
Hailing Dr Kanjwal, Prof Iqbal said: “He helped not only in terms of clinical and technical help but also in arranging a generous support from Biotronic, USA which proved timely for many poor patients who otherwise would probably not have got this sophisticated treatment for want of sufficient resources.”
Dr Iqbal also appreciated Director SKIMS Prof Showkat Ali Zargar for his support and encouragement in allowing the conduct of such workshops which aim at exchange of expertise.
Pertinently the “management of advanced heart failure by biventricular pacing and Tacharrythmias ( abnormally rapid heart rates)  by radio-frequency ablation” was started few years back with the support of Dr Kanjwal.
“Over the years the Department of Cardiology has evolved as a prominent centre for various advanced interventional procedures for treatment of Coronary, Congenital and Rheumatic heart diseases, besides the treatment of heart rhythm disorders using pacemakers,” a medico said.
