Chief Minister lays foundation of PDD data centre

MANZOOR-UL-HASSAN

Srinagar, Dec 5: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Monday laid the foundation stone for Rs 54 crore Data-cum-Customer Care centre at Bemina here to improve e-governance and create resource data in Power Development Department (PDD).
The state-of-the art facility, spread over 9304 sft, is dedicated to the activities related to power distribution, consumer related services including metering, billing, revenue collection and customer care, the Chief Engineer M&RE Kashmir, Muhammad Muzaffar Mattoo told Greater Kashmir. “The cost of civil infrastructure is likely to be about Rs 4 crore and the completion target for civil works is 2012. The centre will be equipped with modern computer hardware and software worth Rs. 48.5 crore,” he said.
About the Data Centre, Mattoo said it would be connected to different utility offices including at the sub-divisional level through dedicated 512 kbps intranet. “It will be leased from a reliable telephony service provider (TSP),” he said.
According to the project outline the Data Centre would host the JKPDD Web Portal on a dedicated server, which will enable consumers to download electricity bills and also make payments through internet.
“The bulk SMS related to billing information and power scheduling will be generated from the Data Centre for the convenience of the consumers,” the outline reads.
It said the Data Centre should be linked to Disaster Recovery Centre at Jammu by a dedicated 10 Mbps link for providing live backup in the event of failure at the data centre.
According to the outline, the Centre is coming up under Ministry of Power, Government of India funded Restructured Accelerated Power Development & Reforms Programme (R-APDRP), that contributes about 35% of the scheme cost.
Chief Engineer said the building would have a state wide Network Operations Centre (NOC) to monitor 30 project areas in the first instance.
“The building will also house a 24 x 7 Customer Care Call Centre. Besides providing services to the consumers, the Data Centre shall be helpful to the Department for effective revenue management, energy accounting & auditing, network planning, asset management and resource mobilization for maintenance management,” a project chart said.
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah was also present on the occasion.
Meanwhile J&K Electrical Employees Union presented a memorandum to the CM that focuses on the development of employees and department.
The Union President Abdul Salam Rajpuri appreciated the establishment of Data cum Customer Care Centre.
