HDC, HI organize functions in Ganderbal, Kupwara

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF DISABLED

Srinagar, Dec 6: Hope Disability Centre (HDC) and Handicap International (HI), NGOs, in collaboration with department of social welfare, Ganderbal, and Kupwara organized joint events to observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Kupwara and Ganderbal.
 “Over 300 persons with disabilities participated in these functions,” said a spokesman of the Handicap International in a statement.
 The NGOs with the support of the district administration represented by the deputy commissioner, Ganderbal, Showkat Ahmed Mir, the district social welfare Officer, Qazi Irfan, and other senior officials from education and health departments organized a function at Wayil, Ganderbal.  More than 200 persons with disabilities and their caregivers gathered on Saturday to give a strong testimony on their need for more inclusion. The 2011 theme of the International Days of Persons with Disabilities was “Together for a better world for all: Including persons with disabilities in development”.
 “On Friday, December 2, the same event was organized at Handwara in presence of Tehsildar, Kupwara, Shabir Ahmed Darzi, the district social welfare officer, Kupwara, Riyaz Ahmed, and other officials from education and health department. More than 100 persons with disabilities attended the event. During the events on December 2 and 3, several programs were conducted that included donation of mobility aids, wheel chair race, painting competition and throw ball competition etc. In Ganderbal, the deputy commissioner, Ganderbal, also donated Rs 15,900 among 54 persons with disabilities,” said the spokesman, adding that “Handicap International has been supporting Hope Disability Centre, a local NGO based in Wayil, Ganderbal, to provide quality rehabilitation services to persons with disabilities in Kupwara, Baramulla and Ganderbal districts of Jammu and Kashmir since October 2009.
 This project is funded by the European Commission Humanitarian Aid & Civil Protection Department. It aims at identifying persons with disabilities, assessing their needs for physical and social rehabilitation, referring to appropriate institutions, providing specialized and basic physical rehabilitation services at community and institution levels.”
