Handwara killing
This refers to the killing of civilian named Manzoor Ahmad in Handwara. How long shall forces continue to kill civilians in the name of ‘mistaken identity’? Regretting the incident is not enough. The forces must understand that a single fire can kill a civilian. Human life seems to be losing value in Kashmir. The Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has rightly asked the forces not to violate the Standing Operation Procedures. Such incidents are going to affect the elected government in Jammu and Kashmir. The Home Minister P Chidambaram must take a serious note of the Handwara killing and ensure that no such incident takes place in future. Kashmir is a fragile place where such incidents can trigger unrest for months together. I am sure that it would be too dangerous for the credibility of New Delhi in Kashmir if such incidents continue.
