Justice must

This refers to the news ‘Police to rebuild its maligned image.” I wonder how they will be able to do it. The only way they can do it is to punish the guilty cops involved in killing of civilians last year. Police Department was once considered to be the savior of people in times of crisis. But here the concept is completely different. While the law and order has to be a priority for them, they need to exercise restraint while dealing with peaceful protesters. In no part of the world are protesters dealt with bullets, except in extreme cases where no other alternative is available. But here people are booked for protesting on Facebook or on the streets peacefully. New Delhi must acknowledge the importance of dissent in any democratic set up. If it will choke the voices of dissent by any means, it is going to backfire and prove costly. We have seen it in the past three years on a run. Let this year be the year of peace and justice; Justice to the families which lost their near ones in unrest.
