Over 10 lakh migratory birds visit Shallabugh wetland

Ganderbal, Feb 16: As many as 10 lakh migratory birds have visited Shallabugh wetland, Forest officials have revealed.
 “Wide variety of birds visited the wetland spread over 25,000 kanal of land from Takenwari Srinagar to Sangan Ganderbal,” in charge, wetland Shallabugh, Forester Abdul Rashid Wani told Greater Kashmir.
 He said the birds travel thousands of kilometers from distant areas including Siberia, Central Asia, Northern Europe, Ladakh, China and Central Asia to reach Shallabugh.
 Wani said some of the popular migratory birds visiting the wetland were goose, bar goose, white heeled duck, shoveller, red-crested pochard, white-eyed pochard, common teal, pintail, mallard, gadwall, coot, hoonk and graylag adding pintail, common teal and gadwall arrive in large numbers.
 “During this season, the birds started to arrive from last week of October and they will leave from March," Wani said.
 Wani said the wetland was facing threats due to pollution and inflow of sewerage from the adjoining inhabitations.
