Jammu, Feb 1: Over a dozen state government employees, including two senior leaders, suffered injuries when police cane charged them to foil their march to Civil Secretariat here at Town Hall road on Tuesday. Police also detained some employees’ leaders but were released in the evening.
The employees have given ultimatum to the coalition government to fulfill the “agreed demands” by February 20. As a mark of protest the employees unions had called for state-wide demonstrations in the regional headquarters - in Jammu, Srinagar and Leh - to press their demands.
The employees have also threatened to go on indefinite strike, in case, the state government fails to consider their demands till February 20, the protesting employees’ leader Muntazir Mohu-Din told Greater Kashmir.
Hundreds of employees under the banner of Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) assembled at the Town Hall in Jammu Municipal Corporation premises to march towards the civil secretariat and as they marched ahead, police asked them to stop the march which the JCC declined and on seeing them moving ahead police resorted to cane charge in which at least 12 employees, including Muntazir Mohu-Din and Devanand
Gill suffered injuries, the protesting employees claimed.
Muntazir said that the government had agreed on some demands of the employees which need to be fulfilled for the betterment of the employees’ community.
“The retirement age should be enhanced from 58 years to 60, the existing pay anomalies should be removed and the daily wagers/ contractual employees who have completed their specified period in government service should be regularized,” Muntazir said.
