Bold decision

This refers to the news “Govt. decides to go public on new Police Act.” We must appreciate the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for taking such a bold decision. Ideally things about police are never discussed publicly in Jammu and Kashmir. But it is encouraging that the state government has decided to take feedback from stakeholders about the new police act. Police is meant for the safety of the civilians. So provisions in the bill should be pro-public. Care must be taken that any legislation, aimed at bringing police reforms, must include zero tolerance to human rights violation as has been promised by the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister from time to time. We must understand the essence of human rights. Respect for human rights forms the foundation of a strong society. In Jammu and Kashmir, what is urgently required is respect for human life.
