'PM likely to announce mission for state Basmati'

Jammu, Feb 24: Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Mohan Singh, during his scheduled visit to Jammu next month, is likely to announce a special package for the promotion of state’s Basmati on the pattern of Saffron mission.
The state had submitted a detailed proposal to the Union government seeking a special Basmati mission on the pattern of Saffron mission to promote this distinct rice variety cultivated in the sate, said chief minister Omar Abdullah at investiture ceremony of Best Farmer Awards 2010-11 here today.
Omar, according to an official statement, said that during his visit in the first week of March, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was expected to make the announcement in this regard.
“We have sent a proposal to the Central Government to have a separate mission for Basmati to give boost to its production as we produce one of the best varieties in the world”, Omar said.
Earlier, he presented best farmers award at state, district and block level to 142 cultivators of Jammu division.
