'GoI agrees to augment ST scholarship quota'

Jammu, Feb 4: Reaffirming Government’s assurance to bring all the students belonging to Scheduled Tribe category under scholarship schemes, Social Welfare Minister, Sakina Itoo has said the Government of India had agreed to enhance the scholarship quota for J&K and approve all pending cases.
 Addressing gathering after disbursing post-matric scholarship cheques among the students of ST here, she said the issue of removal of quota limits in scholarships cases fixed by the Centre was taken up with Union Minister for Water Resources and Minority Affairs, Salman Khurshid in a meeting, in which he agreed to sanction all pending cases of pre-matric, post-matric and merit-cum-means scholarships submitted for approval.
 As many as 84 students of polytechnic college and GMC, Jammu were given scholarship.
 She said 5648 students had been brought under the scheme this year and the officers had been asked to submit all the pending cases to the Centre in time.
 Sakina said the provision of free books to the ST students had been stopped by the Centre and assured them that the matter would again be taken up with the Union Ministry to restore this facility.
