11 quintals Fukki seized, man held: Police

Awantipora, Feb 8: Police has seized 11 quintals of Fukki being ferried in a truck to outside J&K arresting a man at Awantipora. 
 Addressing media, Superintendent of Police, Awantipora, Muhammad Irshad said, “Police intercepted a truck (RJ04G-3415) and during searches recovered 11 quintals of Fukki concealed in C- grade Apple boxes.”
 He said the driver, Balraj Singh of Patiala, Punjab was arrested and the preliminary investigations revealed that a gang of drug peddlers was involved in transporting this narcotic substance from the valley to different States.
 “Three person, Ghulam Muhammad Makroo alias Mama son of Abdul Aziz of Arwani Bijbehara, Shabir Ahmad Bhat son of Muhammad Sultan of Chursoo and Muhammad Akbar Wani son of Abdul Khaliq Wani of Chursoo are the kingpins running this illicit trade. The trio is at large and efforts are on to apprehend them,” the SP informed.
 He said during last six months, about 19 cases of NDPS had been registered in the Awantipora police station and 10 persons had been booked under Public Safety Act.
 Attributing the arrest of the drug peddlers to the awareness programs launched by the police in the areas where the crops like Bhung and poppy are cultivated, Irshad said, “We have been regularly organizing camps and distributing literature among masses to curb the drug menace. Besides, we are also roping in local Imams, village heads, respectable citizens and teachers to sensitize the people about the menace of drug addiction.”
 He said seminars on narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances were now being regularly organized by the police in the areas where the contraband crop was extensively grown.
