Doc body condemns frequent police ‘assault’ on medicos
Threatens state-wide agitation from Jan 4
Srinagar, Dec 31: The Doctors’ Association Kashmir has condemned, what it called, the frequent assault on doctors by the police in health institutions.
“We are anguished and pained the way Dr Sameer, medical officer, SDH, Sogam and Dr Akash-surgeon specialist, DH Kulgam, were manhandled by the police and SOG personnel,” Association spokesman said, adding “these armed forces instead of protecting the life of doctors had become a threat to them.”
The Association demanded immediate release of Dr Akash who has been arrested by SHO Kulgam for his ‘no fault.’ It also appealed to the authorities to take strict action against the ‘erring’ police officials within seven days failing which the association will be forced to launch a state-wide agitation from January 4, 2011, saying “the onus of responsibility shall be on the authorities.”
“Frequent incidents of police interference in the affairs of hospitals and harassment of doctors and paramedics are badly affecting the patient care in the health institutions. The doctors are being mercilessly beaten and arrested once they are reluctant to issue the opinions in medico-legal cases as per the wishes of station house officers and other security agencies,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Association executive council members led by president, Dr Nissar-ul-Hassan visited the SDH, Sogam, where Sameer Ali was severely beaten allegedly by the DSP, SOG, and then taken to SOG camp to declare an SOG man as under the toxic levels of alcohol without such clinical signs or lab documentations. “The Association organised a protest rally and submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner, Kupwara, and minister for CAPD, Qamar Ali Akhoon, demanding strict action and arrest of DSP SOG for the criminal act.”
