Of Nostalgia and the good old days of student politics

This refers to a popular column  Nostalgia, by our noted  columnist ZGM. He has revealed some stories of student days about politics ( GK. 9-1-2011). In it he recounts some of his student leaders like, Ahmad Ullah Niaz, K.H.Khushid, Sana Ullah Shamim, Mir Abdul Aziz, and Agha  Ashraf. He is of opinion that the students have also played   their  role in the politics of the State both prior to 1947 and after.
It was a pleasure to read this marvelous  write up in Greater Kashmir. It has rekindled my memories of college days, when I happened to be the student of S.P.college, Srinagar during 1943-1945. It was P.N. Bazaz, who first
thought of organising    the students  under the banner of   Kashmir Youth League in about 1938. In his efforts, he had the patronage of Shaikh Muhammad Abdullah as well as G.M. Sadiq. As all the three patrons had different aims in student politics, the League died its natural  death. In those days, the Punjabi students would not like Shaikh Abdullah for his pro-Kashmiri lineage, they were interested in ushering the Muslim League  and Muslim Conference politics. However, the Kashmiri Muslim youth, who were pro-Mirwaiz supported this organisation which was named the
Muslim Students Federation. Earlier it was known as Muslim Students Union, which was active under the guidance of Yusuf Bachh, Khushid Hassan, Abdul Aziz Mir, U.Raina and Ghulam Muhammad. This student organisation had the support of the Muslim Conference of Mir Waiz Moulana Yusuf Shah. It received guidance from the College teachers like Sahibzada Mahmood Ahmad.
The Communists who were active in the politics of Kashmir under the active guidance of Comrade Qurban, Mr. Bedi and G.M. Sadiq, also organised a students organisation. Its members were Nasir Ahmad, P.N.jalali, Miss Vidya Madan and Moti Lal Misri. Financial support to this organisation was provided by Miss Mahmooda Ahmad Ali Shah, the Chairperson of the Free thinkers society.  Among other members, it had Mir Qasim, Giyas uddin and Fida Hassnain. This organisation was more particular in winning its disciples by organising study circles.
We had another students organisation named National Students Union. It was patronised by Shaikh Muhammad Abdullah. During  its  earlier days its members comprised of J.N.Zutshi,  Satya Bhushan. Someshwar, Kachru, Anupam Dhar and Bakhshi Abdul Majeed. Incidently, it may be mentioned that Indira Ghandi and Mrs. Mirudula Sara Bai  tried to organise the Youth Congress   but failed.
In May, at the time when Qaid-i-Azam Jinah paid a visit to Kashmir, many students visited his camp.  Among them mention may be made of Comrade Abdul Aziz  and K H Khushid. In one of the meetings, he asked them, had they read Bazaz's Inside Kashmir. When he received the negative answer. He advised them to study literature on  all subjects.
