Srinagar, Jan 13: Amid unprecedented security, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah on Thursday inaugurated community centre in Khan-Kahi Moulla area of the Old City.
After the killing of a teenage student, Tufail Mattoo, on June 11 last year, the CM for the first time today visited Khan-Kahi Moulla area of the old city. Khan-Kahi Moulla, the venue of today’s event was decorated with banners and buntings of the National Conference by party activists last night.
The CM was accompanied by Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Asghar Samoon, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Shiv Murari Sahai and other officials of the police and civil administration.
Earlier, Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) had laid a siege around Khanyar, Baba Demb, Naid Kadal, Fateh Kadal, Bohri Kadal, and Zaina Kadal. The forces had erected barricades at over a dozen places to restrict the movement of vehicles along the interior roads of the old city. The forces had also occupied high rise building in the area to keep a close watch on the movement of people.
The tough restrictions around the venue caused inconvenience to the pedestrians as well as the traders.
“Since morning, the forces have restricted the movement of vehicles and pedestrians in the area. No one is visiting our shops,” an angry trader, Ayaz Ahmad said.
“Even the residential houses have been occupied by the forces on the pretext of security. There is chaos and confusion everywhere,” he added. (PBI)
