Kashmiri skier wins first gold for India

Srinagar, Jan 14: The Valley based skier, Arif Khan gave dream start to hosts India in the 1st South Asian Winter Games by winning gold on the inaugural day of the event at Auli, Uttrakhand on Friday.
 India clinched gold and silver medals in the Alpine Giant Slalom skiing event in men's category. Arif Khan won the gold with a timing of 2 minutes and 21.60 seconds, while Jamyang who took 2 minutes and 21.74 seconds to settle for a silver. Bronze medal was bagged by a Pakistani, who helped his country open its account in the games by registering a timing of 2 minutes and 21.75 seconds.
 The 1st South Asian Winter Games has started in twin cities of Dehradun and Auli in Uttarakhand. The event will be held for three days and in it participants from countries like Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and India are participating. The games are being conducted by the Indian Olympic Association and the Winter Games Federation of India.
 In the Indian contingent there is only one JK player, Arif Khan and he represented Country in the inaugural ski race.
 Besides Arif Khan who is lone competitor from JK in the event, only Olympian of State, Gul Mustafa is also part of the games as Chief of Technical Committee.
 Talking to Greater Kashmir on phone from Auli, Gul Mustafa said, “Arif has made whole State proud. He proved today that JK has got tremendous talent in winter sports. He deserves applause for his achievement.”
 “We have got talent but only thing that we lack are facilities and encouragement. I am awestruck to see the facilities and infrastructure here in Auli and Dehradun. The Ice skating and Ice Hockey arena has a seating capacity of 2,000 and the ice skating rink area is 60meter by 30meter, in which about 100 to 150 persons can skate every hour. It also has an Olympic size (50 by 25 Meters) fully air conditioned swimming pool, basketball courts and a cafeteria inside the complex” he said.
