Snowfall hits life in HP, Uttarakhand; Delhi warmer

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

New Delhi, Jan 15: Heavy snowfall today threw normal life out of gear in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand even as a warmer morning greeted Delhi and plains in northern India.
Though the mercury level raised at most parts in Uttar Pradesh, three more people died due to cold, taking the statewide toll to 130 this winter.
Intermittent snowfall coupled with sleet and rains cut off several areas in Himachal Pradesh from rest of the state and forced suspension of vehicular traffic.
The Hindustan-Tibet national highway was closed beyond Sanjauli near Shimla due to heavy snowfall, which also cut off road communication in the entire area beyond Manali in Kullu.
A large number of vehicles were stranded between Dhalli, Kufri, Narkanda and Kingal as the road is covered under 45 cm to 60 cm of snow. The flights between Shimla, Kullu and Delhi were also suspended due to foggy conditions.
Cold tightened its grip in Uttarakhand with the higher reaches receiving heavy snowfall, while rainfall coupled with hailstorm lashing the plains.
There was heavy snowfall in Garhwal and Kumaon Himalayas including Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Auli, Nandadevi, Munsyari and Dharchula.
However, it was a warm day in Delhi with the minimum temperature rising to 10 deg C, three notches above normal, from yesterday's 6.1 deg C.
One death each was reported from UP's Bhadohi, Chandauli and Maharajganj districts.
