64-YEAR WAIT OVER
Karchay Khar hamlet in Kargil gets electricity
G N ZIA
Kargil, Jan 16: It was an unusual day for the residents of Karchay Khar hamlet in Sankoo block here as they assembled on a spot from where ‘unbelievable’ for them would happen – their houses would get electricity after 64 years.
None from this historical hamlet, which was a nerve centre during Buddhist period in 1300 AD, wanted to miss the occasion of seeing lamps in their households getting illuminated after decades.
According to the residents, Karchay Khar was the capital of Rani Gal Khatoon during Buddhist era but remained neglected over the years.
It was after MLA Zanskar Feroz Ahmad Khan intervened and provided Rs eight lakhs for the 160 KV diesel generator that Karchay Khar got electricity and the moment the generator was inaugurated on Sunday by chief executive councillor LAHDC Kachoo Ahmed Ali Khan the whole hamlet jumped into celebration.
The residents of 150 households in the hamlet greeted each other and the dignitaries, including executive councilor LAHDC Syeed Qazim Sabry, Haji Ghulam Amir and DC Kargil M Raju who were present on the occasion.
