3 held for eve teasing
Police seeks parents’ co-operation

Srinagar, Jan 18: After months of apparent silence over eve-teasing on the Airport Road, the police Tuesday woke up to check the menace in the hub of coaching centres there by detaining three of the accused. While two of them were instantly shifted to Central Jail Srinagar, the third one is behind the bars at Sadder Police Station. The locals have hailed the police action.
The development came forth following a Police Public meeting in the area Monday where the residents are learnt to have appealed the SP South, Sujeet Kumar to get rid of the menace while the latter had assured them immediate action.
Police said its special patrol party caught the trio roaming around outside coaching centres.
They were identified as Muhammad Shafi of Ram Bagh, Basharat Ahmed of Solina (both booked under section (109 CRPC and shifted to jail) and Ashiq Hussain of Hyderpora.
The SDPO Sadder Shabir Shah while confirming the arrests said police would be keeping an eye on the movement of youth, particularly outside coaching centres.
But he said the menace couldn’t be curbed without the active participation of the parents.
“We appeal to the parents that they should not allow their wards to remain standing outside coaching centres or for that matter even roam around there unnecessarily,” Shah told Greater Kashmir.
He cautioned that the police would act instantly against the spoilt lot.
“Whoso ever is found doing the mischief will be booked within shortest time span,” he added.
Pertinently, there have been constant reports of eve-teasing and driving by minors on the fashionable south City road while some deaths also took place in the area.
Two years ago, a teenager Romana Javed was crushed to death by two car borne eve-teasers while just a month ago an engineering student Aatif Mudabbir Dar died when hit by a speeding swanky car driven by a student. However, the accused in Aatif’s case, Jasim Hussain Kawoosa was released on bail some time back.
Besides, last year, an elderly woman was knocked down by an alleged eve-teaser driving recklessly near Parray Pora.
The locals had been accusing the police of acting mute towards the menace.
But the Tuesday action has drawn appreciation from public circles with many appealing the Inspector General of Police, Shiv Morari Sahai to ask the force to keep a constant check on the menace.
“The drive shouldn’t end with today’s action but people should feel that the safety and decency prevails,” said some locals. They also appealed the police chief to launch drive against the menace of driving by minors.
“Students coming for class 12th coaching aren’t expected to be above 18. How come do they drive cars and bikes for the tuition?” argued a Baghat Barzulla resident.
Pertinently Greater Kashmir has been highlighting the issue.
