For police ‘mistake,’ B’pora family denied relief

‘ENFORCED’ DISAPPEARANCE

TARIQ RASOOL

Maliknard (Bandipora), Jan 24: Family of a disappeared man in this remote area of North Kashmir is still awaiting the government relief, which is pending due to the mistake allegedly made by police in recording the parentage in the FIR.
Recalling the fateful night, the family said, “On Jan 25, 2001, Ismail Khan was picked by soldiers from the home when he was giving medicine to his ailing mother.” “The men in uniform barged into our residence, caught Ismail by his hair and dragged him out of the room only to take him to some unknown destination. Since then, we have been moving from pillar to post to trace him,” 70-year-old Abdullah Khan, father of the Ismail said.
“The police mistakenly identified the disappeared as (Abdullah Khan, father) in place of Ismail Khan (son) after lodging an FIR in the disappearance case,” the family told Greater Kashmir adding that despite repeated assurances from the higher ups in the police,  the alleged mistake wasn’t rectified yet. He said the administration couldn’t provide relief due to the alleged police mistake and sought its rectification first.
Abdullah Khan said, he visited every detention centre, but failed to trace Ismail. “Ismail used to work as a labourer and on the fateful day had come home with two months salary besides fruits for his ailing mother,” he said adding “Ismail was the only bread winner for the family and was working very hard to provide all the facilities to the family.”
Abdullah has developed various ailments including heart problems, but wants to die after seeing his son’s return. “I am on death bed, but want to see my son before breathing last,” he said.
