Srinagar, Jan 24: On the persistent demand of transporters and Kashmir Economic Alliance, the government has issued orders exempting the transporters from payment of token tax and waived interest/late fee for renewal of route permits and fitness certificates from June 2010 to Nov 2010, a KEA spokesman said.
He said at a meeting chaired by chief minister Omar Abdullah and attended by transporters and members of KEA, the CM issued such directions.
“Accordingly the Commissioner/Secretary, Transport Department has issued SRO 27, exempting transporters of the Kashmir Valley from the operation of section 7 (pertaining to token tax) of J&K Motor Vehicles Act 1957 and SRO 28 exempting transporters of Kashmir Valley from payment of interest/late fee for grant of renewal of route permits and fitness certificates able to be levied under motor vehicles Act 1988 (Central Act) and Jammu and Kashmir Motor Vehicles Rules, 1991 both of 21st January 2011, from June 2010 to November 2010,” he said.
Regarding rollback of passenger tax, the Chief Minister, according to the spokesman, assured the transporters that the matter would be looked into sympathetically.
Meanwhile, the KEA has hailed the chief minister for “his timely intervention in the matter and for giving relief to the Valley transporters from the payment of token tax and interest/late fee from June 2010 to November 2010.”
