Why dichotomy?
Recently the Home Secretary GK Pillai made a statement on forces cut in Jammu and Kashmir if situation in the state worsens. The statement evoked sharp criticism from Army Chief. In Greater Kashmir of January 20, the General Officer Commanding (GoC) of Srinagar-based 15 Corps, Lieutenant General S A Hasnain has said that no forces-cut would take place until all “terror camps and launching pads” are dismantled in Pakistan administered Kashmir (PaK). Why this dichotomy? Why are Kashmiris made to suffer this way? Don’t they have a right to live peacefully in absence of forces? It would be a good gesture if Army agrees to forces cut and partial revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from civilian areas. If Army continues to oppose the move, it makes it clear that they don’t want peace to return to the Valley.
