Jammu, Jan 26: Director Handlooms Chandra Gupta said that Handloom sector has a lot of potential for employment generation. “In fact the sector is second largest contributor in employment generation for being labour intensive cottage industry,” she added.
 Addressing a press conference at Rail Head on Tuesday, she referred to the cluster schemes for Handloom weavers which are comprehensive to cater to all needs of the weavers including skill upgradation, modernized looms, training, exposure visits and marketing incentives, etc.
 Gupta said the department is organizing Dast-e-Hunar National Expo-2011 at Jammu Hatt from January 28 to provide marketing facilities to Handloom weaver community of the State.
 She said the department has provided financial assistance to the tune of Rs. 72 lakh to 23 primary societies under Market Intervention Scheme adding that the Directorate of Handloom is running 7 clusters and 11 Group Approach Products, an official statement said.
 She, according to the statement, said a number of District melas were conducted during the year to facilitate sale of Handloom products of the weavers. The Director said besides special exhibition at Katra, the department is organizing National Expo-2011 from January 28 which will be inaugurated by Industries Minister Mr. S. S. Salathia. She said the mega event will run for 16 days where variety of handloom products from all over the country would be available at genuine rates.
 She said world famous Kani shawls, Pashmina shawls, Raffle shawls, mufflers besides linen jackets and shirts, home furnished bed covers and curtains, tweed material and coats, quilts and a variety of other products of the State will be put on sale on affordable rates.
