Devotees complain of inconvenience
Say erratic power, pungent water, shortage of space affect celebrations
SYED IMRAN ALI HAMDANI
Srinagar, Jan 28: While scores throng the hillock shrine of Hazrat Sheikh Hamzah Makhdoom Sahib (RA) during the ongoing Urs, the Intizaamiya Committee and the devotees there have accused the government of failing to provide requisite facilities like uninterrupted power and potable water.
Sajjadah Nisheen of shrine, Peerzada Shahid Geelani Makdhoomi said the power supply remained erratic during the 13 daylong Urs, which will conclude Saturday.
“We have been facing immense inconvenience due to erratic power supply because of which devotees particularly elderly find it difficult to visit the shrine in night hours,” Shahid who is also the Chairman of Sultan-Ul-Arifeen Trust, said.
“Even though the government had assured us of uninterrupted power supply the authorities failed to deliver,” he added.
Shahid also alleged that the water supply to the area was “misfit for consumption.”
“The tap water smells foul,” he said.
Apart from this, he said there was a shortage of space at the shrine due to which the devotees feel congested.
“Even though the population increases with each passing day, till now the shrine space has hardly been expanded,” Shahid said.
Similar complaints were voiced by devotees. “One can hardly manage getting space to offer Salah,” said Ghulam Muhammad of Rang Hamam.
The Sajjadah Nisheen said a design for the shrine expansion has been prepared and the same would be tabled before Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah for his consent.
About sanitation he said even though for the first two-to-three days there was a problem, thereafter the Srinagar Municipal Corporation woke to maintain cleanliness upto the mark.
Meanwhile, on Friday special prayers were held at the shrine between Asar and Maghrib Salahs.
Amongst others the Intizaamiya Committee members including Sajjadah Nisheen, Imam Khateeb Peer Ali Muhammad Makhdoomi, Imam Sahib Peer Shabir Ahmad Makdhoomi, Naat Khawan Peer Ghulam Hassan Makhdoomi, Khatam Khawan Abdul Majeed Makdhoomi, Khatam Khawan Ghulam Hassan Makdhoomi, Fateh Khawan Advocate Muhstaq Ahmad Makdhoomi were present on the occasion.
Pertinently the annual Urs is held from Safar 11 to Safar 24 of Islamic Calendar, the Hijri
