Wildlife deptt intensifies vigil around Dachigam

Srinagar, Jan 29: A day after police arrested six persons accused of having poached the rare Kashmiri stag or Hangul, an endangered species recently in Dachigam Wildlife Sanctuary on the outskirts of Srinagar, Wildlife Department has intensified checking in the periphery areas of the Sanctuary.
The Wildlife Warden Central said that permanent nakas have been laid at Sangri, Chak, Pehlpora and Khanmoh areas to keep a vigil on hunters. “Such attempts won’t be allowed to repeat,” he said and added that 234 Hanguls, according to previous census, are present in the Sanctuary.
“We are making efforts to increase the number of Hanguls,” he added.
Pertinently Hangul is on the verge of extinction in Kashmir. Known for its magnificent antlers with 11 to 16 points, Hangul was once distributed widely in the mountains of Kashmir. During early ‘90s, their number was believed to be about 3,000 to 5,000. (KNS)
