Census Commissioner to assess preparations
MUDDASIR ALI
Srinagar, Jan 5: The Registrar General of India who is the Census Commissioner is scheduled to visit Jammu on Thursday to assess the preparations for the crucial second phase of the decadal census - population enumeration- which would start next month.
The Census Commissioner, Dr C Chandermouli would be accompanied by team of officials from the Census department including Deputy Director General.
“They are on a 2-day visit to the state. The team is scheduled to meet Chief Secretary and other administrative heads of various departments tomorrow afternoon,” said Director State Census Department, Farooq Ahmad Faktoo. Chandermoli would call on the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, on Friday afternoon before returning to New Delhi, said Faktoo.
The purpose of the CC’s visit was to assess the ongoing preparations by the state for enumerating its over one crore people, said another official of the Census department.
A 4-member team of union Census department including Deputy Registrar General had already flown to Jammu few days ago to take on the spot assessment of the activities being carried out by the State Census Department and prepare ground for Chandermoli’s visit. They would leave for Delhi tomorrow.
“The headcount will start from February 9 and last till March 1. It will be followed by revision exercise for another 5 days and the provisional population data will be available by March 7 next year,” said an official.
The first phase of the Census, House-listing, House Census Operations and Preparation of National Population Register, which was taken up in May last year, was completed last December.
“The data collected has been dispatched to the department wing at Parwanoo, (Himachal Pradesh) for processing,” officials said.
Last month the Registrar General of India had called a 2-day meeting of all the state Census Directors at New Delhi to review the progress on the decadal exercise.
For conducting population enumeration, the state government would be deploying its 35,000 employees. Once the whole exercise is completed it would provide new data not only about the population but also about the socio-economic progress and cultural profile of the people.
The Administrative Departments and Heads of Departments have been directed not to transfer officers/officials appointed as Supervisors and Enumerators without the prior consent of the Principal/District Census Officers till the completion of the operations.
