Court issues fresh summons to Geelani, son-in-law

Income Tax Evasion Case

GK COURT CORRESPONDENT

Srinagar, July 9:  A local court on Saturday issued fresh summons to Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani and his son-in-law, Altaf Ahmed in two different cases of income tax evasion.
The Court, however in two other cases of income tax evasion granted bails to Akash Amin and Abdul Rashid Bhat, following which they furnished bail bonds of Rs 20,000 each.
“While the previously served summons had not reached Geelani and his son-in-law, due to some fault in court dispatch service, fresh summons have been issued by the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Srinagar against the duo,” sources told Greater Kashmir.
The case came up for hearing at CJM’s court this morning. The IT department was represented by its senior standing counsel, Javid Ahmad Kawoosa while none represented Geelani and Altaf Ahmad Shah.
The compliant  filed by The Income Tax Department against Geelani alleges that the separatist leader concealed particulars of his income and evaded tax payment under the Income Tax Act of 1961.
“Geelani has been evading the tax payment and is culpable of an offence for not filing the return of income in response to the notice, although he enjoyed taxable income.
A search under section 132 of the Income Tax Act of 1961 was conducted on the business and residential premises of Syed Ali Shah Geelani of Hyderpora Peerbagh and Delhi on June 9, 2002. At the time of search, cash and certain loose documents/material were found which were seized by the Authorized Officer,” the complaint states.
