Quality healthcare is hallmark of a strong nation
This refers to the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah’s speech at the Government Medical College recently. He has assured that government will provide quality medical education to the doctors so that they could subsequently give best healthcare facilities to the people across Jammu and Kashmir. Omar is right that if f government is providing quality medical education to the doctors by giving every possible facility, assistance and state-of-the-art teaching aids in classrooms, it also expects quality medical care for the patients visiting hospitals. Quality healthcare is a top priority of many countries today. A significant amount of money is earmarked for healthcare development at the grassroots level. The same can be true for Jammu and Kashmir, if the Government really means business. The Chief Minister has rightly expressed displeasure over the reluctance shown by some doctors for working in remote and far-flung areas of the state. It is a matter of grave concern that there are medicos who show unwillingness to get posted to the remote corners of the state and the patients in such areas are also in dire need of quality healthcare from specialist doctors. The problem, however, seems to be the facilities that Government is providing to such doctors. They can be sent there along with families with proper lodging facilities and perks. The doctors should work with a missionary zeal and fulfill their commitment with the people. While the CM has reaffirmed his government’s commitment of all possible assistance to GMC Srinagar, it is important to look into the issue declining number of professors in the College, which can cause its de-recognition.
