Geelani, Mirwaiz under house arrest
UMER MAQBOOL
Srinagar, July 15: Chairmen of both factions of Hurriyat Conference remained under house arrest on Friday.
While Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani remained under house detention for the fifth consecutive day today, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was put under detention this morning.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, spokesman of Hurriyat (G) Ayaz Akbar said. “For last one year government is using this draconian tactic to keep him (Geelani) away from the people and this clearly shows that they have been frustrated by his popularity,” Akbar said.
He said, the pro-freedom leader was again debarred from offering Friday prayers. “This is sheer interference in religious matters,” he added.
Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was also put under house arrest this morning. “By keeping Mirwaiz under house detention, the government again prevented him from discharging religious responsibilities,” a spokesman of the amalgam said.
“On one hand curbs are imposed on the peaceful activities but on the other hand mainstream parties are enjoying freedom of holding rallies and gatherings.”
Meanwhile, Democratic Freedom Party chairman Shabir Ahmed Shah was detained by police at Pakherpora Budgam this afternoon, where he was scheduled to address a public gathering later.
“Another leader of the amalgam Mukthar Ahmed Waza was also kept under house detention,” the spokesman added.
