Choking dissent

After the human rights activists Gautam Navlakha who was deported from Srinagar airport recently, police has just restricted the movement of Shiromani Akali Dal (Mann) President Simranjeet Singh Mann along with other 15 Sikh leaders who intended to visit a Sikh village in Baramulla. News reports said an order by District Magistrate Srinagar  asked Mann to leave Srinagar as his presence was a threat to the law and order. I wonder how it is a treat to law and order. By doing such actions, police is giving an impression that all is not well with the security in Kashmir. Why is everyone a law and order problem for the police? Why is the administration looking into everything from the prism of security? People in Kashmir have a right to live and those visiting from outside have a right to express their opinion on what is going on in the Valley. So where does the security trouble lie? It is highly condemnable that police is adding fuel to the fire by taking such extreme steps. The Government must ensure that some room is given for dissent so that people don’t take to streets again.
