Austere marriages

This refers to a thought-provoking piece titled 'Marriages-then and Now' by Dr Shabana Aslam. The author deserves applauds for dwelling deep into the institution of marriage which, under the prevailing circumstances, is suffering a heavy jolt and has ceased to be a holy affair in many respects. This union of souls has been reduced to a petty materialistic exchange between the two families. When money matter in such issues, they lose their essence. Moreover, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) never advocated extravagance. He always preached performance of marriage in a simple and austere manner. We must follow the teachings of Qur’an and the Prophet (PBUH) so that the institution of marriages is restored the glory and sanctity it deserves.
