Corruption menace
This refers to the recent news titled “Tarigami goes Anna way.” Following the footsteps of prominent social activist Anna Hazare, CPI (M) General Secretary and MLA Kulgam Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami has started a campaign against corruption from South Kashmir town, demanding a Lokpal type legislation in the state.
I completely support such a move. And people should come out in large numbers and seek end to corruption. J&K has been ranked at No 2 in the list of most corrupt states. This seems to be no concern in the state government. The important institutions which would help curb corruption have been allowed to rot. The protesters in Tarigami’s rally have rightly said that whether it is administration, health or education, corruption rules the roost in the state. And Mr Tarigami is also right in asserting that the upward graph of corruption is going to erode the fundamentals of our society. This menace has deep rooted implications and if the trend continues the day is not far when ours will be a society of criminals. Government must revive institutions like State Accountability Commission and also consider a a Lokpal type legislation in Jammu and Kashmir. Regarding National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), Tarigami has made some revelations which should be probed by the State Government. The Act is not being properly implemented in the state as there is gross mismanagement of funds and the poor and deserving rural populace was deprived of even the jobs cards.
