To streamline traffic, Div Comm hunts for space for taxi stands

Srinagar, May 31: In a bid to overcome the continuous traffic pressure in Srinagar City, the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon conducted a two day tour of the summer Capital including the areas of Lal Chowk, Pantha Chowk, Taingpora, Batmaloo, Merkshah Sumo Stand, Doodgangah and Nowgam Railway Station, a site seen as ideal location for Jammu bound taxis.
 An official handout said: "According to the orders of High Court for shifting the Lal Chowk Sumo Stand, the Divisional Commissioner alongwith a team of officers identified 25 kanals of land near SDA Complex Doodganga and 4 kanals of land near Nowgam Railways Station, besides land has also been identified at Panthachowk for the said purpose. Presently the Lal Chowk Sumo Stand has been shifted to TRC Ground on temporary basis.”
 The Divisional Commissioner was accompanied by DIG, Traffic, SSP, Traffic, Director Tourism Transport Commissioner, Kashmir, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Vice Chairperson, SDA, Joint Commissioner, SMC, Custodian Kashmir, RTO, Kashmir, Tehsildar North and South, R&B authorities and other senior Officers.
 Sources said the officials discussed the feasibility of construction of a taxi stand near Nowgam Railway station.
 “It was unanimously agreed that the site was ideal for the Jammu bound taxis,” the sources said adding that government eyes on a four kanal vacant land available there.
