Pulwama, Shopian now hubs of livestock industry
Pulwama, June 9: The twin districts of Pulwama and Shopian have started getting recognized as the hub of livestock industry in the state with their collective daily milk production touching 6.13 lac liters after having achieved the distinction of having more than 95 per cent cattle population upgraded.
Similarly the twin districts having been earmarked for muttonous breed of Corriedale sheep their joint annual mutton production has crossed 12.20 lac Kgs and similarly annual poultry production is estimated at over 70 lac broilers.
\This was revealed at a joint review meeting of the twin departments of Animal & Sheep Husbandry in the twin districts of Shopian and Pulwama at Pulwama on Wednesday which was presided over by the Minister for Animal; & sheep Husbandry Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi.
The Commissioner cum Secretary to Government Animal & Sheep Husbandry Department, B D Sharma took a detailed review of the performance of the two departments in the twin districts.
He laid emphasis on implementation of job oriented schemes like DEDS, VCF, Mini Sheep Farm Scheme and also implored Animal Husbandry Officers to take implementation of Rural Backyard Scheme for the Development of poultry on a holistic basis as the scheme could help the state to bridge the gap between the supply and demand and help the BPL families in improving their nutritional status at no added costs.
He added that the state being deficit ion poultry feed production the scheme would be a boon for poultry as no additional feed would be required to be imported.
He urged the Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, Shafat Noor and Dy Commissioner Shopian, Muhammad Sharief Sood to see that the banks operating in their respective jurisdictions did cooperate with the departments of Animal and Sheep Husbandry in the implementation of employment generating schemes. He also laid emphasis on implementation of NABARD sponsored RIDF programme in the twin districts to have plots of land identified & transferred to the department in different villages so that buildings for Animal/Sheep Centers are constructed. In his presidential address, the minister urged the departmental officers to popularize schemes for value addition of livestock products so that the real benefits could accrue to the breeders.
